It’s a tricky thing to grow enough food for us hungry humans without destroying the natural world. And when I say a tricky thing, I mean it’s one of the greatest challenges humanity has ever faced.

Luckily for us, it is theoretically possible, and the easiest way to get there is by drastically cutting down on meat.

Conservationists tend to spend their time worrying about protecting forests, catching poachers or keeping carbon out of the atmosphere. But all these things (and more) are driven by humans. Given that it’s easier and cheaper to reduce the human birth rate than it is to address these other issues, why aren’t conservationists more concerned about keeping our population down?

My research has the overall goal of identifying pathways to balance human resource use with the conservation of biodiversity. I am motivated by providing solutions to conservation problems. I develop and apply approaches grounded in spatial statistics, spatial ecology and conservation decision science.

​I have worked with NGO's in various local communities in Bolivia, South Africa, Guinea, and Mexico. I am currently leading a project with the University of Victoria (Canada), the goal of which is to develop a cost-effective management plan for the Fraser River Estuary.

I am also the founder of a campaign that allows individuals to replant their share of deforestation. So far, we have planted over 70 thousand trees. Visit 400trees.org for more information on planting trees with us (including fancy gift certificates).
