Nilanjana "Buju" Dasgupta is a nationally recognized expert on diversifying academia. 

Her research spotlights how implicit bias influences people’s first impressions and behavior toward others, as well as how implicit stereotypes influence individuals’ own academic and professional choices. 

Dasgupta is particularly interested in identifying solutions that remedy implicit bias. Her recent research identifies solutions that can reduce the impact of implicit bias on gender gaps in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and career opportunities thereby closing gender gaps iand broadening participation of diverse individuals in STEM.

When Nilanjana "Buju" Dasgupta came to the United States as an international student, she felt for the first time what it was like to be a person in the minority—an experience that has stuck with her throughout her professional career. Today, she is professor of psychology and director of the Institute of Diversity Sciences (IDS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Learn how she puts her research to work solving real-world social challenges and how through IDS she has convened others across diverse disciplines to deploy STEM research to advance social justice.

Nilanjana Dasgupta's talk "STEMing the Tide: Female Experts and Peers Enhance Young Women's Interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics" is part of "Women and STEM: How stereotypes undermine the interest and success of women in science, technology, engineering, and math," a Faculty Curator Speaker Series organized by Jenessa Shapiro, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. This series addresses the question of why women continue to be underrepresented and underperforming in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. Rather than focusing on possible biological or socialization factors, this series considers the role of stereotype threat. Speakers will present research demonstrating the emergence of stereotype threat in STEM domains, the mechanism that account for this phenomenon, and the ways in which we can intervene to prevent the deleterious influence of stereotype threat. 

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women is an internationally recognized center for research on gender, sexuality, and women's issues and the first organized research unit of its kind in the University of California system.
