Biography

Professor James Mathieu taught at LMU from Fall 1972 until Spring 2006, when he retired from University service. His students held him in high regard and deeply appreciated the way he engaged them in off-campus academic activities. Indeed, Jim regarded... the mission of sociology as one that could be accomplished only by establishing and maintaining a connection between the classroom and the broader social world.

Most notable in Jim's academic career were his successful international ventures. He taught three times in the LMU Bonn study abroad program, establishing extensive links with German scholars. He also engaged in other LMU programs in Cuernavaca, Beijing, and Hawaii, and twice visited Greenland to develop an understanding of its historic connection with Denmark.

Jim received international recognition when he was awarded two year-long Fulbright teaching awards, one in Zambia (1975-1976), another in Lesotho (1988-1989). As would be expected, Jim effectively incorporated knowledge from these experiences into his LMU classes.
