Biography

Kevin Newman is a distinguished national and international journalist who has been reporting for almost 30 years, covering or anchoring news in the midst of election nights, wars, revolutions and assassinations.

In 1984 Newman joined Global Sportsline and later reported from Queen’s Park and Global’s Ottawa Bureau. In the late 1980s, he became a correspondent for CTV National News, and covered stories in Alberta and the Canadian Arctic for CBC The National.

In 1994, Newman joined ABC News in New York and served as a back-up Anchor & correspondent for World News Tonight and co-hosted Good Morning America. He also co-anchored ABC World News Now and World News This Morning. A defining moment in Newman’s career occurred when he effectively reported the breaking news of Princess Diana’s death, earning rave reviews for his knowledgeable, assured delivery under tremendous pressure. Newman earned two Emmy Awards and a distinguished Peabody Award for his reporting and anchoring at ABC News.

Newman returned to Canada in 2001 as the Founding anchor & Executive Editor of Global National. Four years later it was Canada's #1 newscast, and his work earned multiple Gemini Awards as Best Anchor. In 2010 he departed the newscast to pursue his interest in digital media. He is currently Digital News Evangelist at Bell Media - Canada's leading media company - and Host of CTV News Question Period: Canada's #1 Sunday Morning political broadcast.

Throughout his varied career, Newman has interviewed some of the world’s most memorable leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Tutu and Jimmy Carter. He has also traveled the world to deliver news from distant locations, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Iceland, Russia and The Vatican.

Newman is also founder of New Man Media Ltd.which has co-produced multiple documentaries and the reality series 'Operation: Unplugged'.

Accomplishments

Board of Directors - Communitech Digital Media Incubator Hub

Communitech is a non-profit organization that supports technology companies in Waterloo Region and promotes the area as a technology cluster. Our programs and events connect professionals, share ideas, and strengthen companies. We also champion innovation and collaboration on a provincial and national level. The newly-built Communitech Hub is a unique digital media ecosystem and one of many commercialization facilities that make up the Canadian Digital Media Network, which we proudly steward.

Recipient - Gemini Award

In 2005 and 2006, Kevin received the Gemini Award for Best News Anchor. He also won a 2008 Gemini Award in the category of Best Newscast. The Gemini Awards honour the best in Canadian television as determined by members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and other industry professionals.

Recipient - Edward R. Murrow Award

In 2003, Kevin received an Edward R. Murrow Award in the category of Best International Continuing Coverage. The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the electronic news profession.
